Realtime

See who is on your site right now and what happened in the last 30 minutes, and know how fresh those numbers are.

This page explains the Realtime screen, so you can tell what "online now" really counts, read the live map, the activity list and the live visitor card, and know what the screen does when its live connection drops.

What "online now" means #

A visitor is online when something of theirs arrived in the last 2 minutes, such as a page view or a custom event.

The number is approximate on purpose. Nothing tells Clear Saga that a person closed the tab, so someone who reads one long article without clicking drops out of the count, and someone who left a moment ago stays in it until the 2 minutes are over.

Everything else on the screen looks at the last 30 minutes.

Realtime takes no date range, no comparison and no filters. It always shows now.

The tiles #

Tile What it counts
Online now People with activity in the last 2 minutes.
Visitors People seen in the last 30 minutes.
Views Pages viewed in the last 30 minutes.
Events Custom events recorded in the last 30 minutes.

The map #

The "Online visitors" map shows a dot for each place that has someone online. The line under its title gives the online count, whether the feed is live, and the number of places.

A dot marks an approximate place, never an address: the centre of a town or city, or the middle of the country when the town is not known. A visitor with no known country is online but cannot be drawn, so the map can say "Location unknown for everyone online" while the tile shows a number.

You can zoom in and out, reset the view, and open the map full screen. For a signed-in member a dot is a button that opens the live visitor card. A dot with several visitors lists them first, up to 20.

The activity list #

The Activity card lists what happened in the last 30 minutes, newest first. Its tabs choose what you see:

  • All: page views and custom events together.
  • Views: page views only.
  • Visitors: one row per visitor with the last thing they did and their country. For signed-in members each row has a generated name and opens the live visitor card.
  • Events: custom events only.

Each row shows what happened, on which page, and how long ago. Hover the time for the exact moment in the site's time zone. A missing page is marked as a 404.

New rows arrive at the top while you watch. If you scroll down to read, the list holds still, and a small button at the top says how many new rows are waiting. Click it, or scroll back to the top, and the list follows the feed again.

Each tab holds only the newest rows: 50 for All, Views and Events, and 100 visitors. Where the Events screen is open to you, "View all" opens the full log there. There is no replay of a session.

The live visitor card #

A member of the workspace can open one live visit, from a map dot or a Visitors row. A panel slides in with:

  • a generated two-word name and a small drawn picture. Both come from the visitor code of the day, so they change every day and name nobody,
  • the place, device, system, browser, source, current page, session time and visits today,
  • the pages and custom events of this visit in order, the newest 50 of each.

The card refreshes every few seconds and says "Not updating. Trying again." while a refresh fails. A visit leaves the live list about 30 minutes after its last hit, and the card then says that it has ended.

Conversion likelihood. The card compares this visit with the site's average, for example "about twice as often as average". Once a night each site works out how often visitors from each country, device, system, browser and channel completed a conversion goal over the last 30 days, and the card combines the groups this visit belongs to. It is an estimate, with no AI model. It needs a goal switched on, and 30 conversions and 500 visitors in that period. Below that it says "Not enough data yet". Figures are added to the words from 100 conversions and a matching group of 100 visitors. After a goal changes, working out the rates takes about half an hour.

Estimated value. When at least 20 visitors of the period are tied to an order, the card also says what such a visit is worth on average: the chance of an order times the average order. A site with orders from a connected Shopify store shows it once enough visitors are tied to an order.

On a site with Remember returning visitors on, the card also shows the visit count and a link to the profile, or "Not remembered. No cookie is linked to this visit."

The ranked lists #

Three lists at the bottom rank the last 30 minutes by visitors, 8 rows each.

  • Countries: where the recent visitors are.
  • Pages: the pages they viewed. Someone who viewed two pages counts under both. The arrow on a row opens that page on today's Overview.
  • Referrers: the sites that sent them.

How fresh it is #

The screen keeps a live connection to Clear Saga. While it works, the "Online now" tile carries a Live tag and the numbers update about as fast as visits arrive, at most once a second.

When the connection drops, the screen handles it by itself.

  1. It tries to connect again, with longer and longer waits.
  2. After a few failed tries it asks for fresh numbers every few seconds instead. The tile then says Delayed and the map line says "Reconnecting". The numbers are right, only a few seconds behind.
  3. It goes back to Live when the live connection works again.

While the browser tab is hidden, the screen asks for nothing. It connects again when you come back.

If the site is deleted or your access is removed meanwhile, the screen says so instead of showing old numbers.

Who can see it #

Owners and Admins see Realtime for every site, and a Viewer for the sites they were given. A shared dashboard shows it when the link was set to include realtime. A shared link, an embed widget and the demo show no names, and no dot or row can be opened. While a workspace's dashboards are locked, so is Realtime. See plans, usage and limits.

Realtime through the API #

A program or an AI agent reads the same picture with one call, realtime.snapshot. It takes the site and answers the online count, the tiles, the places, the newest activity and the ranked lists. For a token of the workspace each visitor row also carries its visit number and the seed its generated name is made from. realtime.visitor takes one of those numbers and answers the card. Once the visit is off the live list it answers 404. See the realtime operations in the API reference.
