Conversion goals

Mark the events and pages that matter to you, such as a signup or a thank-you page, and see what share of your visitors reach them.

This page shows how to tell Clear Saga which actions matter on your site. After reading it you can switch on the automatic conversions, add goals of your own, and read the conversion rate on the dashboard.

What a goal is #

A goal marks something a visitor did as a conversion. It is either an event, such as a signup, or a view of a page, such as the page people land on after an order.

A goal is a rule that is applied each time a report is read. Nothing extra is recorded for it. That has two pleasant effects:

  • A new goal also counts what was collected before you added it.
  • Changing, switching off or deleting a goal changes the numbers for the past at once, and switching it back on brings them back.

Goals live under Settings, Conversions. Owners and Admins of the workspace can open that screen. Team and roles lists who can do what.

Automatic conversions #

The script can record a few common actions by itself, with no change to your site. These are the automatic conversions:

  • Contact click
  • Messaging click
  • Outbound link
  • Form submit

In plain words they cover a click on a phone or email link, a click on a link to a messaging service, a click on a link that leads to another website, and a form being submitted. Each one is sent as a custom event under the name above, so it also shows up on the Events screen.

To use one, flip its switch in the "Automatic conversions" section. Two things are worth knowing:

  • The script only sends automatic conversions while the "Auto conversions" tracking option is on. Switching the first one on turns that option on for you.
  • A change takes up to 5 minutes to reach your site.

Only the kind of link is sent, never the phone number or the address behind it. An outbound link carries the hostname it leads to, and a submitted form carries the id of the form when it has one. A click inside an element that you marked with data-clearsaga-event counts as your own event and not as an automatic conversion.

The pencil next to a switch renames the event that is sent. Completions from before the change stay under the old name, so they no longer count toward this conversion. An automatic conversion cannot be deleted. Switch it off instead.

Goals of your own #

Use "Add goal" in the "Goals" section and choose what completes the goal.

Event. Type the name of a custom event your site already sends. It must match exactly, capital letters included. Events from recent weeks are suggested as you type. A name the script keeps for itself, such as pageview, cannot be a goal.

Page. Type a path that starts with a slash. A path is matched exactly, capital letters included, unless it ends in a star:

Path Counts a view of
/thank-you That page only
/order/* Every page under /order/, but not /order itself
/order* Every path that starts with /order

A page goal can have a label, which is its name in reports. Left empty, the path is the name.

The list shows each goal with what completes it, how often it was completed lately, and a "Counted" switch. Switched off, a goal stays in the list and is counted nowhere. The menu of a row lets you edit or delete it, and for an event goal it can start a funnel that ends with that event. Deleting a goal deletes no events.

A site can have up to 20 goals of its own, next to the automatic conversions. Every goal of a site needs a different name.

The conversion rate #

As soon as one goal is switched on, the Overview shows a Conversion rate tile. It is the visitors who completed any goal that is switched on, divided by all visitors.

The rate is counted within one day. For this number a visitor is recognised for a single day, so someone who visits on Monday and signs up on Tuesday counts as a visitor on both days and as a conversion on Tuesday only. That holds whether or not Remember returning visitors is on. Privacy: cookieless by default explains why.

Next to the date range, a Conversion menu appears with "All visitors" and one entry per goal. Pick a goal and the whole Overview narrows to the visitors who reached it. The tile then shows the rate of that one goal: its converters divided by all visitors. The choice is a filter like any other, so it is listed with your other filters and can be removed there.

Goals change one more screen. On Campaigns the Conversions column counts every custom event while no goal is switched on. Once a goal is switched on, it counts goal completions only.

Goals through the API #

A program or an AI agent with an access token can read goals, their completions and the conversion rate split by source, country or page. A token with the Write permission can also add, change, switch and delete event and page goals. The goals reference lists every operation.

A token cannot switch, rename or delete an automatic conversion. Renaming one changes what the script sends from your live site, so that stays in the dashboard.

Alerts on a goal #

An alert rule can watch a goal and call a webhook when its completions or its rate cross a threshold you set. Deleting a goal removes the alert rules that watch it. See alerts and webhooks.
