# Managing a site

> Rename a site, change its domain or time zone, replace its site key, reset its statistics or delete it, and know what each change does.

This page covers the settings that concern a site as a whole: its name, domain and time zone, its two identifiers, and the two actions that delete data. After reading it you will know what each change does to your numbers before you make it.

## Where the settings are and who can change them

Open a site and choose **Settings** in the sidebar. The settings are split into tabs. This page is about three of them: General, Installation and Danger zone. The Visitors tab, with the switch that remembers returning visitors with a cookie, has [a page of its own](/docs/returning-visitors).

Owners and Admins of the workspace see every tab and can change everything on this page. A Viewer sees the Team tab only, with their own access. A [shared dashboard](/docs/shared-dashboards) and the public demo have no settings at all. [Team and roles](/docs/team-and-roles) lists what each role can do.

The settings of a site stay open while the dashboards of the workspace are locked.

## Name, domain and time zone

These three are on Settings, General, in the "Site details" card. Change them and click **Save changes**. None of them changes the site key, the share link or anything that was already collected.

### Site name

The name is shown on the home page of the workspace and on shared dashboards. The sidebar lists sites by their domain. Renaming a site changes nothing else.

### Domain

The domain is the address of your website, such as `example.com`. You can paste a full address and it is saved as the bare domain: lower case, without a path and without a leading `www.`. Two sites of one workspace cannot have the same domain.

The domain is not a list of allowed sources. Visits are accepted from any hostname that sends the key of this site. What the domain does decide:

- **What counts as your own site.** A visit that arrives from the domain or one of its subdomains is not listed as a source, and a visitor is recognised across the subdomains.
- **How the site is named** in links, and in the phrases you type to confirm a reset or a delete.

A change of domain applies to new visits only.

### Time zone

The time zone decides where a day starts and ends on every chart of the site. "Today" on the dashboard is today in this time zone, not in the time zone of your computer.

When you change it, the charts are regrouped in the new time zone straight away, history included. Nothing is deleted: the same page views and visits are sorted into different days. A visit shortly after midnight in the old time zone may belong to the day before in the new one, so the numbers of single days shift. The one exception is the bot counts that were already stored, which keep the grouping they had.

## The site ID

Settings, General also shows the **Site ID** in the "Identifiers" card, with a copy button, next to the date the site was created.

The site ID names the site in addresses: it is the part of the address you see in the browser when you open the site in the dashboard. It is also how a program names the site. Every report of the [API](/docs/api) takes it, and an [AI agent](/docs/agents) gets it from the list of sites before it asks for numbers.

The site ID cannot be changed and it is not the site key.

## The site key

The site key is the value in the tag on your pages. It is on Settings, Installation, in the "Scripts" card, on its own line with a copy button and inside the snippet above it.

The key is public. It ships in your pages, and all it can do is send visits to this site. It can never read data or change anything, so there is no need to hide it.

### Rotating the key

"Rotate key" in the same card replaces the key with a new one. Use it when the tag was put on a website that should not send visits here.

> [!WARNING]
> Rotating the key breaks the tag that is on your pages now. The old key normally stops working within 60 seconds, and then every page with the old tag stops recording. Visits sent with the old key after that are dropped and cannot be recovered.

After you confirm, the card shows the snippet with the new key. Copy it and replace the tag on your site. Until you do, nothing is counted. The data you already have is not touched, and neither are your settings, goals or share link.

If visits stopped arriving after a rotation, the tag on your site still has the old key. See [troubleshooting](/docs/troubleshooting).

## Resetting the statistics

"Reset statistics" starts a site again from zero and keeps its setup. It is on Settings, Danger zone, and also at the bottom of Settings, Data.

| Deleted | Kept |
| --- | --- |
| Every visit, page view and custom event of the site | The site, its key and the tag on your pages |
| Performance samples, orders and refunds | Tracking options, conversion goals, exclusions and notification settings |
| Bot counts and the live visitor list | Funnels, campaigns, chart notes and saved segments |
| | The share link, the embed widgets, the team and pending invitations |
| | The usage count of this month, because the events were collected |

To confirm, you type the word RESET followed by the domain of the site, exactly as the dialog shows it.

> [!WARNING]
> A reset cannot be undone. There is no copy to restore from. If you may need the data, [export it](/docs/data-export) first.

The tag keeps working, so new visits are counted from the next one on. Until it arrives, Settings, Installation shows the site as waiting.

## Deleting a site

"Delete site" on Settings, Danger zone removes the site from the workspace. To confirm, you type the word DELETE followed by the domain.

Deleted with the site:

- The site and everything collected for it.
- Its settings, conversion goals, exclusions, funnels, campaigns, chart notes, saved segments and alert rules.
- The share link and the embed widgets, which stop working.
- Viewer access and pending invitations to this site. A Viewer who had access to no other site of the workspace stops being a member of it.

Kept: your other sites, and the usage count of the workspace for this month.

The tag on your pages stops recording within about 60 seconds.

> [!WARNING]
> Deleting a site is permanent. There is no trash and a deleted site cannot be restored. A site also cannot be moved to another workspace.

## What the demo site does not allow

The public [demo](/demo) is a real site with sample data that everyone can open. It is read-only: a visitor can change the date range, the comparison and the filters, and has no settings, no export, and no way to write chart notes or save segments.

The statistics of the demo site cannot be reset and the demo site cannot be deleted, whoever asks.
